Movie Review of "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.
The first thing that I want to comment about this particular movie is the acting - outstanding performances by the three lead characters played by 'Song Kang-Ho', 'Shin Ha-Kyun' and 'Bae Doo-Na' - these players totally got into the flesh of their respective roles, which on that account alone makes the the movie well worth watching!
The plot plays out well, but I have to say it is very slow paced. The real action/drama doesn't really kick in until the the final third of the picture but when it finally does the it's worth the wait!
The whole story centers around two characters whose completely different lifestyles are thrown together by a series of tragic events that ultimately lead them from their parallel existences to personal and merciless acts of vengeance that through fate joins them at the hip that eventually catapults them both toward a final day of violence that sates neither of them or other parties involved!
Interesting. Poingnant at places. Shot beautifully, the second film (that I know of from the director of "Oldboy") does lack the intensity of his first feature but is still a good film in it's own right.
Last, but not least I have heard that the sequel "Sympathy For Mrs. Vengeance" is well below par of this feature and it saddens me that Korean directors are falling into the easy-come-easy-go routine of banging out sequels like "Hollywood."
I'm crossing my fingers that the natural and raw talented filmmakers like 'Park Chanwook" return to offering us more original pieces of work?!
We shall see?!
